Greetings Dieselfunkateers! BLACK METROPOLIS RETURNS! It’s looks like its gonna be one of those days. Back in 2016 I had the privilege of presenting a career retrospective of my work at Gallatin Galleries curated by Keith Miller. This show has formed one of the pillars of my present efforts, which is to SHOW THE WORLD MY WORK!
Black Metropolis: 30 Years of Afrofuturism, Comics, Music, Animation, Decapitated Chickens, Heroes, Villains, and Negroes.
The Hammonds House Museum is very clear:
Our mission, “to preserve, exhibit, interpret and increase public awareness about the contributions that visual artists of African descent have made to world culture” is the underpinning of the of the institution’s ongoing work.
Presently, the Legendary Carrie Mae Weems is exhibiting with as well as amazing artists such as Felton Eaddy. Also please note: Hammonds House is presently celebrating their 30th year anniversary. BLACK METROPOLIS will be the GRAND FINALE for this Celebration taking place during the final quarter of the year. More NEWS to Come! For you folks who didn’t get around to it before now you’ve got another chance. You’d best believe Daddy is gonna be putting on a show and drawing portraits. You betta dressup and whatnot:-)
Greetings Dieselfunkateers! We are back with another entry of The Dieselfunk Dispatch. I needed a little advice. Then I saw Jeff Smith, Creator of Bone…
Greetings Dieselfunkateers!Decades ago I embarked on the mission to produce a character that would embody the spirit of adventure, fun, and drama.Well actually, I’ve always tried to do that with every character I do.I grew up looking at Superman, Batman, Buck Rogers, Star Wars.As a child of the 60s-70s I had my heroes that allowed me to wonder. But I oftentimes wondered what those of my parents generation and earlier had as lighthouses of valor?Did they have a Flash Gordon or a Rocketman?Sadly, the answer was NO.Representation of people of color was systemically depicted in the most stereotypical fashion; if at all. When it came to genre’s such as Science Fiction and Action Adventure, there was literally no representation at all; with only obscure exceptions.Black and Brown boys and girls, let alone men and women, could not see themselves in outer space.Upon the arrival of the 1960-70s things would begin to slowly change. There was Lt. Uhura and Lando Calrissian. But they often seemed alone…literally the only black people in space. In the remote chance they were present, they would die at the hands of the alien or monster…just before the credits rolled or our comic came to an end.More regressive was the depiction of female characters in an over-sexualized state. This is and still remains rampant in comics. In a crazed yet equal way, the mysogyny of female characters are not bound by color or ethnicity. Nothing more sobering and insidious than seeing our earth mother heroine wearing a thong. There would be no escape for us.
Matty’s Rocket is designed to go beyond such limitations while acknowledging our past history. No doubt this story is designed specifically for women of color but the universality of the themes aspire to connect with everyone.
Greetings Dieselfunkateers! We are now entering the third week of creating content for The DIESELFUNK SHOW (Please SUBSCRIBE & HIT the Bell Button for NOTIFICATIONS) Make no mistake about it, PRE- blog, vlog, GLOGG, and COMATIC is a very different conversation than POST blog, vlog, GLOGG, and COMATIC. Why? Well to discuss content creation is a different action than actually creating it. Now I won’t beat around the bush, this is very hard work. Long hours, intense focus, and ultimately in some cases, sleep deprivation. This…All while producing COMICS. Add to this I’m working with my Twin Brother JIM FIELDER; which makes it without question THE MOST FULFILLING WORK OF MY LIFE.
As I stated in my earlier post, this would be a process of learning and adjusting. We are constantly working on generating content. We have finished our first professional photo session, conducted by the awesome Amy Frushour Kellyhttp://www.frushour.org/ that will be used to promote our operation.. First thing we’ve noticed with respects to Youtube is that SEO optimization and thumbnails are KEY. This will grow even more complex as Facebook ramps up its video monetization scheme…hint: IT WILL BE WAR:-) Further, when you are starting out it makes more sense to consolidate your channels into ONE channel. Now if you’re already down the road a bit thats okay as you can share playlists on the other channels. Honestly, it’s a bit of a bear maintaining both The Dieselfunk Show and High John Conqueror, although I love them both. However, upon listening to Youtube creator/ consultant Derral Eves http://derraleves.com/ and Youtube Maestro/creator/consultant/graphic designer, Roberto Blake http://robertoblake.com/ we have devised a plan. First step is High John Conqueror will likely be folded into The Dieselfunkshow. This extends to more than just Youtube. We will CONSOLIDATE ALL CONTENT.
Every INTEREST will utilize CONTROL of manufacturing and distribution which becomes a SEGMENT of the larger PROGRAM. This reduces the amount of maintenance from each separate channel. So you’ve got the Dieselfunk GLOGG, OLD BLACKMAN TALES and HIGH JOHN CONQUEROR all consolidated into THE DIESELFUNK SHOW. With more to come.
Greetings Dieselfunkateers! Took a quick break (lots of those lately) to do a color sketch of Chuck “DragonBlack” Collins’ BOUNCER for my ongoing black comic creator series thingy. Collins is definitely one of the major visual forces going in comics today. That said, his REAL secret weapon: Mug can WRITE HIS BUTT OFF. Matty’s Rocket 3 is about to head out to the printers. But as you know, the work never stops. Presently in comic story breakdown for an artistic collab with BLACK COMIX RETURNS scribe John Jennings for Author Stuart Jaffe’sBLUESMAN.
I’m working on it Fellas!
I’ve been on a bit of a voyage of artistic self-discovery lately with jaunts in Corel Painter and Clip Studio Paint. Nothing like finally being able to do quasi elegant inks in digital by switching from using a digital ink brush to a digital watercolor brush!!! It only took 20 years to figure it out! Who Knew!:-)
