The Dieselfunk Mississippi Delta Comicbook Workshop was a BLAST! GREETINGS DIESELFUNKATEERS!
The Cartoonists of the Young Lites program have delivered a blazing collection of comic stories ranging from the cerebral, colorful and dynamic. So very very proud of these young ladies! I was overwhelmed by the participation (in very short notice) by Women Cartoonists who were willing to network with the students. On the final day we had the Great Joyce Brabner (who gave moi his start in comics), hotshot Sha-Nee Williams, with an awesome video return chat by Diana Leto. I want to give a BIG THANKS to Young Lites Program Coordinator, Tarra Slack and to all of the industry pros who supported us on such short notice. They are: Joyce Brabner, Sha-Nee Williams, Afua Richardson, Regine Sawyer, Barbara Brandon, Pamela Thomas (Museum Of Uncut Funk), Diana Leto, Micheline Hess and the Sister who started it all…Jackie Ormes.

Day 2 at of The Dieselfunk Mississippi Delta Comics Workshop. Greetings Dieselfunkateers! We are making progress on the stories and art. Special thanks to Afua Richardson, Jennifer Crute, Diana Leto and Regine Sawyer for making themselves available to the Girls. I will state the irony of 40 years ago when my brothers and I did comics in Clarksdale it was like being a social outcast. Now cut to 40 years later and I’m asked to come in and teach comics to youth…in Clarksdale. On top of that I was interviewed by the town newspaper. It has been a very fulfilling experience. Life is Ever Changing. On to Day 3!
Matty’s Tours the Low-down Dirty South! Greetings Dieselfunkateers! Our work takes us below the Mason Dixon Line to the Mississippi Delta Comics Workshop.
The Dieselfunk Crew has now set out once again to further spread the Gospel of Matty’s Rocket. After a quick flight to Atlanta, GA to pick up my Dad (and Running Buddy), we proceeded to Clarksdale, Mississippi. Day One featured our girl students to the art of creating comics as well as to innovators of the form (Day 1 was Jackie Ormes, Micheline Hess and Barbara Brandon. Special Thanks to Ms Tarra Slack for setting up the event. Next up our group will get more deeply into art creation. Afterwards, Dad and I drove around and saw areas we haven’t visited in decades. No doubt a cosmic event because I am bringing Matty back to her literal Birthplace. Up next; DAY 2
